For the Mazda Miata venting is a requirement. It's not a requirement of the battery itself in order to perform however. It's a safety precaution that if there was ever a catastrophic failure in the battery or in the charging system of the vehicle where it caused the battery to be overcharged and excessively gas, that gas doesn't get vented to the interior of the vehicle. It goes through those vents which are then led outside of the vehicle via the vent tubes from the vehicle.
