I don't ever recommend a gel battery for any starting application. Gel battery is primarily deep cycle and throttles the output in order to provide power for a longer duration, so they're not good starting batteries.
I think what you're referring to is called an AGM (absorb glass mat). It's a sealed lead acid battery. These traditionally have a longer lifespan than conventional batteries and have a much higher output for this application.
I'd recommend taking a look at the Leoch LMX18L series battery. This will be a drop-in fit for what you have with the same terminal orientation as well.
