A battery isolator would only need to be used to prevent one battery from draining the others. So for example, if the D4900 and the SB500 were part of an auxiliary battery bank, you could put an isolator in between your auxiliary battery bank and your main starting battery so that way your audio system doesn't drain the main starting battery. But you wouldn't put an isolator between the two of those particular units. The SB500 must have a direct connection to the D4900 in order to maintain and top itself off.
