I'm not sure what you meant by "open type connections causing explosions." If you were to run a piece of metal between the positive and negative terminal of the battery, it will cause a dead short, in which case it will melt the terminals. In terms of a battery exploding due to having open terminals, the answer would be no. There has to be some sort of external action applied to the battery to cause an issue.
